Associate Position
Yellow Wood Associates, located in St. Albans, Vermont, is nationally known for its community economic development solutions for rural communities, nonprofit organizations, and governments in the U.S. concerned with natural resource use and community capacity-building. We conduct and present research, including feasibility studies, best practices, and economic and fiscal impact analyses for rural municipalities. We also offer our innovative Green Community Technologies® program, and provide strategic planning and evaluation services using You Get What You Measure®, a unique values-based approach we created to help groups of diverse individuals measure progress toward shared goals. We are instrumental in creating and applying a wealth creation approach to rural development.

We seek an Associate with excellent project management skills, strong professional networks, problem-solving skills, initiative to take on difficult assignments and continually strive to create top-quality work, and a high degree of intellectual curiosity who will contribute to all aspects of our work. The candidate we seek must be both an effective team player and able to work independently. The Associate will work closely with the other Associates, the Administrator, and the Principal, and report to the Principal.
Associate Job Responsibilities
- Manage a variety of complex projects including, but not necessarily limited to research, strategic planning, feasibility studies, training, and impact assessment
- Contribute to complex economic and socio-economic research projects through literature reviews, interviews, site visits, primary and secondary data collection and analysis, life cycle cost analysis, and spatial analysis (GIS)
- Write compelling reports that translate complex ideas into simple language that leads to action
- Initiate and support marketing efforts through proposal writing, conference presentations and workshops, networking, articles, and website updates
- Become certified in and co-facilitate participatory workshops including You Get What You Measure®
- Market and deliver Green Community Technologies® services
Successful candidates must be able to:
- Manage client relationships, including contracting, communications, fulfillment, evaluation, and follow-up
- Work effectively with a wide variety of clients
- Communicate proactively and with a high level of professionalism with other Associates, Administrator, and Principal
- Work quickly and efficiently on a number of different tasks in a given day and remain organized and focused
- Meet the challenge of a steep first-year learning curve
- Write quickly and well
- Zero in on what matters most when conducting research
- Understand the big picture while paying considerable attention to details
- Take direction, act independently and work well in a team
- Be highly responsible and responsive

- Travel in the U.S. when needed
Requirements:
- Masters Degree plus a minimum of three years’ work experience in a related field (e.g. geography, community development, rural development, applied economics, natural resource planning, etc.)
- Personal maturity and a sense of humor
- Technological savvy with a range of applications including digital collaboration (e.g. social networking, data sharing platforms, webinars, etc.) databases, word processing, GIS applications (ArcView), web design
- Proven research and writing capacity
Plusses:
- Applied economics training and experience
- Experience working in the private sector
- Experience in a small firm
- Facilitation experience
- Marketing experience
- Public speaking experience
- Graphic design experience
The Associate works closely with other Associates and the Principal and reports to the Principal.
