Yellow Wood Associates, located in St. Albans, Vermont, is nationally known for its community economic development solutions for rural communities, nonprofit organizations, and governments in the U.S. concerned with natural resource use and community capacity-building. We conduct and present research, including feasibility studies, best practices, and economic and fiscal impact analyses for rural municipalities. We also offer our innovative Green Community Technologies SM program, and provide strategic planning and evaluation services using You Get What You Measure ®, a unique values-based approach we created to help groups of diverse individuals measure progress toward shared goals.

We seek a highly qualified Associate with excellent problem-solving skills, the initiative to take on difficult assignments and continually strive to create top-quality work, and a high degree of intellectual curiosity who will contribute to all aspects of our work. The Associate will work closely with the other Associates and the Principal, and report to the Principal.

Associate Job Responsibilities

  • Contribute to complex economic and socio-economic research projects through literature reviews, interviews, site visits, primary and secondary data collection and analysis, life cycle cost analysis, and spatial analysis (GIS)
  • Write compelling reports that translate complex ideas into simple language that leads to action
  • Support marketing efforts through proposal writing, conference presentations and workshops, networking, articles, and website updates
  • Become certified in and co-facilitate participatory workshops including You Get What You Measure®
  • Assist the Principal and other Associates with limited administrative duties such as report production, logistics, and mailings as needed

Requirements:

  • Masters Degree plus a minimum of three years’ work experience in a related field
  • Personal maturity
  • Technological savvy with a range of applications including databases, word processing, GIS applications (ArcView), web design
  • Proven research and writing capacity

  • Experience working in the private sector a plus
  • Experience in a small firm a plus
  • Facilitation experience a plus
  • Marketing experience a plus

We are seeking an experienced Senior Associate with passion for and knowledge of the community economic development field, and proven ability to generate profitable opportunities to deepen and expand Yellow Wood’s audience. This position carries the potential for shared ownership over time. The Senior Associate will work closely with the Principal and Associates and report to the Principal.

Senior Associate Job Responsibilities:

  • Help refine and implement the strategic growth plan for Yellow Wood Associates
  • Expand markets for Yellow Wood Associates’ services through proposal writing and interviews, conference presentations and workshops, articles, networking, and market research.
  • Conduct and manage research projects with the Principal, Associates and outside consultants
  • Write and edit final reports and present project findings
  • Design and facilitate workshops, including You Get What You Measure®
  • Manage client relationships, including contracting, communications, fulfillment, and evaluation, and follow-up
  • Technological savvy with a range of applications including databases, word processing, GIS applications (ArcView), web design

Successful candidates must be able to:

  • Communicate proactively and with a high level of professionalism with the Associates and Principal
  • Translate complex ideas into text and graphics that are compelling and readily understandable
  • Think creatively, recognize opportunity, and be entrepreneurial
  • Work both independently and as part of a team
  • Handle administrative work for self and others as necessary
  • Take direction and share responsibility
  • Profitably balance marketing and production activities
  • Travel in the U.S. when needed

Requirements:

  • Minimum of ten years of work in related fields, including applied economics
  • Masters Degree in related field
  • Proven ability to secure contracts and manage client relationships in a consulting environment
  • Proven research, writing, facilitation, networking, and public speaking capacity
  • Personal maturity, excellent speaking skills, and a sense of humor
  • An insatiable desire to learn through reading, research, and listening

Plusses:

  • Personnel and/or financial management experience a plus
  • Diverse, relevant professional networks a plus
  • Familiarity with environmental technology a plus
  • Experience working in the private sector a plus
  • Experience in a small office a plus
