About
Yellow Wood Associates
Yellow
Wood Associates (YWA) is a women-owned small business serving clients
since 1985. YWA offers government agencies a unique blend of experience in
facilitation, training, and process consulting seasoned with knowledge
gained through years of research in community and natural resource-based
development. We are both excellent researchers and skilled facilitators.
Our experience working with federal, state, and local governments,
non-profit organizations, community groups, and foundations in the
United States
allows us to bring a rich mix of perspectives to our work with federal
agencies. In addition to the regular staff, YWA has established a network
of skilled consultants who are available to assist in carrying out
specialized assignments as required. All work performed by YWA is
supervised and coordinated by the Principal.
As a small business, our Principal works closely with each and
every client to ensure a positive outcome. Our commitment to quality is
embodied in our approach to contracting. As part of every contract
negotiation, we ask our clients to withhold 10% of the total project cost
until they are completely satisfied with our work. We have never failed to
receive the final 10% due to client dissatisfaction.
Two aspects of the way we work with our clients distinguish Yellow Wood
Associates from other consulting firms.
First, we see our job as not only assisting clients in getting the
final product that they really want, but also as transferring skills so
that the people with whom we work can develop the capacity to achieve
their goals without us in the future. The second distinguishing aspect of
our work is the way we view expertise. We see ourselves as co-learners
with the client, and value each contract as a process through which we
will both share and expand our own skills and expertise.
YWA’s
training in community capacity building is tailored to the needs of the
communities. The process of program design includes telephone interviews
with a representative sample of people who will attend the workshops to
determine areas of need. YWA’s proprietary
program You Get What You MeasureR has provided the
framework for recent training work.
YWA has
recently received a rating of 90 from Open Ratings, the firm used by the
General Services Administration (GSA) to evaluate firms for inclusion in
GSA Schedules. This is well above the average for our class of business
and signifies excellent overall performance. Ratings for reliability,
cost, delivery/timeliness, quality, business relations, personnel, and
customer support were all above 90 with no negative responses in any
category.
"Our
goal is to work toward creating vital rural communities through attention
to improved interaction of human, natural, cultural and technological
resources. We encourage public participation in the community economic
development process. We work hard to identify practical solutions to
problems confronting rural communities and rural entrepreneurs."
SIN #874-1
Consultation Services
YWA
conducts in-depth qualitative and quantitative research using a variety of
techniques including literature searches and reviews, database analysis,
telephone interviews, surveys (see below), field work, primary and
secondary data collection and analysis, and spatial analysis. We are adept
at integrating information from various sources to yield multi-faceted
understanding of complex topics. Our clients know us for our capacity to
deliver detailed, accurate, and useful information in a timely manner.
We
begin our work with clients by taking the time to understand what exactly
is needed and how clients intend to use our work. By beginning at the end,
we are able to design efficient research methods with clear
responsibilities that allow us to produce superior products. As a small
business, every client receives special attention.
YWA
uses a learning approach to program evaluation. We believe that effective
evaluation is not a one-time endeavor added on to a program at the end,
but an ongoing opportunity to learn and improve. We are able to provide
traditional and innovative evaluation services. YWA has worked with the
USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program in the
Northeast on adopting an outcome funding approach, and with the Vermont
Department of Agriculture and Marketing to design and implement a grants
review process. Federal grants programs that adopt an outcome funding
approach have a greater likelihood of funding projects that produce
behavioral change.
YWA’s
strategic planning experience includes comprehensive sectoral planning as
in our study of the wood products industry in
Northern
New York
State, as well as applications of You Get What You Measureâ
(described under Training Services below).
YWA’s program development experience includes conceptualizing and
implementing the
National
Community
Forestry
Center, Northern Forest Region – part of a USDA CREES Fund for
Rural
America
Center, and conceptualizing and implementing two USDA Rural Development SBIR
programs, See the
Forest
â
and Green Community Technologies.
"This
is the best strategy of its kind I have seen."

Yellow Wood Associates has extensive experience designing,
implementing, and analyzing surveys. We work closely with our clients to
clarify how they intend to use the information collected. With a thorough
understanding of survey objectives, we avoid unnecessary questions and
data overload. We build sufficient cross-checks into surveys to establish
validity of response, and carefully compare sample with population
characteristics. We are skilled in preparing survey summaries for the
general public.
